Bookmaking

Welcome to Bookmaking, our new area based in Bonington 230.
Before booking in to use the room, students must undertake a brief induction where you will be introduced to the house rules, health and safety, and given a demo of what the room is used for.
This is a self-directed workshop space for students to design and create their own books. Please note: this is not a bookmaking service—we're here to provide space and support, but you will be making your book.
Creating a book takes time, planning, and often a few iterations before you get to a version you're happy with. We encourage you to research the type of book you’d like to make ahead of time. Choose a format that suits your content and feels achievable within your skills and the materials available.
Be mindful that videos on platforms like Instagram can make bookmaking look quick and effortless—real projects often take much more time and care!
We strongly recommend making a mockup first. This early prototype can help you think through key decisions, like layout, printed elements, and paper choices, before you commit to a final version.
Please bring all materials you might need: paper, card, screw posts, binder rings, or anything else specific to your design. While we may have a few basic supplies on hand, it’s best to come prepared.
We’re excited to see what you create—this is your project, your process, and your book!
Please sign up for an induction before booking to use the room. Students MUST undertake an induction and fill out the Code of Practice before booking to use the room independently.
During your induction, students will be given a demo of the available equipment and shown examples of a range of binding techniques. Attendees will then have time to create a self guided book of their choice with the guidance of online tutorials and in-house examples.
Once inducted, students are welcome to use the room by 'booking in' using the link below (subject to availability)
We look forward to seeing what you create!
